Joining Us

1st Cheddington is part of the largest youth movement in the world. If you want to be part of this, there are two ways in which you can join us.

As a Young Person

1st Cheddington Scout Group is open to boys and girls aged from 6 to 18.

  • Beavers: for boys and girls aged 6 to 8
  • Cubs: for boys and girls aged 8 to 10½
  • Scouts: for boys and girls aged 10½ to 14
  • Explorers: for boys and girls aged 14 to 18

All of our sections have exciting and diverse programmes, taking in all of the best of what Scouting has to offer. If you want to find out more about any of the sections, it would be a good idea to have a look around their website section. There is plenty of information about the sections including details of the awards and badge schemes.

Please bear in mind that the sections, particularly Beavers and Cubs, may have waiting lists. For this reason, you are strongly recommended to put your name down on our waiting list up to 12 months before reaching the joining age.

If you are interested in joining 1st Cheddington or wish to put your name down on the waiting list, please use our Joining Form to give us the necessary details. Feel free to ask if you have any questions using our Contact Form.

As an Adult (over 18)

We are always on the look out for willing volunteers, no matter how small the time they have available. There are plenty of different tasks, from helping in the background with administration, maintenance of our headquarters or fundraising, to becoming a helper or warranted leader with one of our three sections. You can see more information about Adults in Scouting on the Scout Association's website.

Please see our Current Vacancies for details of where we are in particular need of adult help.

The time commitment can vary from an hour a month to a few hours a week, depending upon what you want to do and how much time you want to give. There is support available every step of the way for all roles. Why not get in contact with the Group Scout Leader for an informal chat about what it involves.

All adult roles in Scouting are subject to Criminal Records Bureau checks; you will also be asked to provide references which will be followed up.

As a Young Leader (14-18)

If you are aged between 14 and 18 and want to help at Beavers, Cubs or Scouts whether as your Service activity in the Duke of Edinburgh Award or because you think this is something that will be interesting and fun then we are always looking for Young Leaders to help at our weekly section meetings running games and activities each week and additional activities at other times. Being a Young Leader is great fun and as well as being used towards the Service section, it also looks great on your CV when applying for further education or jobs.

Please see our Young Leaders page for more information.

Maintenance Activities

We are heavily dependent on volunteer help in maintaining our Scout Hut and keeping the facilities running.

Regular activities include keeping the grass cut in the grounds and cleaning the hall and facilities. There are also many occasional tasks such as minor repairs or replacing a light bulb through to complete redecoration. All of these activities, and the materials required, come from parents and supporters of the group.

We are obviously extremely grateful to everybody who gives up time or resources to assist in these activities.

We are always on the lookout for more help in this area; so if you think you can offer anything that will help, please do not hesitate to Contact Us.

District and County Badges

Vale of Aylesbury Scout District

1st Cheddington is part of the Vale of Aylesbury District which covers the towns and villages to the east of Aylesbury within Buckinghamshire. Vale of Aylesbury District is part of the Scouting County of Buckinghamshire (website: www.bucks-scouts.org.uk).

Our District badge shows pioneering poles lashed together to form an interlocking 'V' and 'A'. The County badge shows the county's emblem of a Swan against a black and red shield. You can tell that it is a Swan (and not a Duck, for which Aylesbury, the county town is famous!) because it has a crown over its neck.

Vale of Aylesbury District consists of the following groups:

1st Aston Clinton
1st Cheddington www.cheddingtonscouts.org.uk
1st Halton (RAF) www.1sthaltonscouts.org
Ivinghoe and Pitstone www.facebook.com/ivinghoe.pitstone.scouts
14th Vale of Aylesbury www.14valeofaylesburyseascouts.co.uk
1st Wendover www.1stwendoverscouts.co.uk
1st Wing www.wingscouts.co.uk
1st Wingrave 1stwingrave.weebly.com

There are currently three explorer scout units in the Vale of Aylesbury:

Cetendone, our own explorer unit, which meets at our headquarters in Cheddington cetendone.novatxt.com
Gondoliers, which meets at 1st Aston Clinton
Hermes, which meets at the 1st Wendover www.1stwendoverscouts.co.uk

The District also runs its own shop which is open every Monday evening at the 14th Aylesbury HQ. See here for more details.
