The Treasure Hunt this Monday night was another challenge to the groups navigation skills. However, in contrast to the hike at Easter, both teams did eventually find the clues. The leaders enjoyed the evnt as we were able to stand on the top of the hill enjoying the most spendid views and sunset with Iain pointing out various stars and planets as the skies darkened. I'm still not convinced that we were looking at Mars though, it looked more like EZY382 coming in to Luton to me. This ... Read more...

The recent climbing activity at Green Park was a great night out, not least because of the amazing turn out by the Explorer Unit which slightly overwhelmed the climbing organizers! For me the climbing wall is a great example of what Explorer Scouts is all about and why I joined up. It was a chance to try something new and to try it with friends. But some of the scouts found out it was a little more than that. It was a chance for some to push themselves out of their comfort zone ... Read more...

The promised cutting from the LBO has been added to the news items. Hope you are all happy with the spin! It was quite a night to remember and we have the promise of returning for a sleepover. Guess the competition will be who can tell the spookiest ghost stories that night and still sleep!... Read more...

On Saturday I checked out the route we will be walking on 14 Dec for the Night Hike. I think it will be quite interesting in the dark, particularly in the woods. On Saturday, it wasn't raining but it was cold and very windy especially on the exposed ridges. I was wearing a ski base layer, 2 fleeces, a water/wind proof, hat and gloves and I was still cold!! Anyway, I'm looking forward to the hike - we need all the practise we can get to be ready for the planned 30k hike in February. Best bit wil... Read more...

I don't know what you thought but what I expected to be a less exciting meeting this week turned into quite an event! We have the best Explorer group name in the country, possibly the world (who has a name that's a thousand years old and relevant to their location? Greek gods and heroes can hardly count!). We also have James, the interpid table freeclimber and Cat was just pipped by the bell. And (my English teacher always said you cannot start a sentance with AND - she's probably turning in ... The Immam of the mosque at Bedford has invited us to visit on Monday 16 November. The idea is that he would show us round and explain what happens as well as answer all our questions. Everyone would have to dress appropriately, remove their shoes and females have to cover their heads with a scarf. We would probably combine this with a stop off for food on the way back.Let me know if you are interested. If not, let me know what you would like to do and I can try to arrange it.... Read more...

It sounds like an incredible evening of tobogganing was had on Monday and the photographs surely prove this! Sincere apologies that I had to submit a sick note and duck out! How you managed to engineer something out of pipe, duct tape, tyres, ropes and snowboards is beyond me! Magnificent!Next Monday will move from a snowy to a culinary wonderland (although I gather you ate well last week too!). I've added the brief in the information section in case you've already spent the £10 on je... Read more...

We had a great opening meeting this week with 11 young people coming along for the first real meeting of the unit. The evening was spent doing various challenges which were great fun, even if volumes had to increase to make yourself heard sometimes. Fortunately, nothing was BAGN. Everybody joined in on the night and if our meetings are going to be like this every week then we are all going to have a fantastic time in Explorers. The Unit decided on black scarves with an orange border ...
