Injury to spectatorsSupervise spectators who should not be allowed within the shooting area or behind it.
Arts and craftsInjury from misuse of equipmentSupervise participants to ensure equipment such as paint brushes are used properly. Take particular care with sharp or hot items.
Check equipment such as saws, cutters, soldering devices etc. is free of obvious defects.
Injury from spillagesEnsure there are facilities to mop up spilt paint etc.
ClimbingInjury to participantsUse approved instructors and equipment as per Scout POR
Injury to spectatorsSupervise spectators who should not be allowed within the climbing area
CookingInjury to participantsCheck cooking stoves for obvious faults
Supervise cooks according to age
Supervise use of sharp knives for cutting food
Injury to spectatorsSupervise spectators who should not be allowed next to the stoves within the cooking area
Food poisoningTrain cooks to apply personal hygiene such as hand washing
Train cooks in cross contamination risks between food types, cooked and uncooked food and cooking utensils
Check that food is cooked properly
Train everyone in personal hygiene
Monitor the quality of washing up and the facilities provided for washing up
CyclingInjury arising from defective bicyclesCheck cycles for obvious deficiencies such as an absence of brakes
Head injuriesAll participants to wear helmets as per Scout POR
Road injuriesSupervise cyclists and minimise use of busy roads
ExplorationLost participantsEnsure groups of participants stay together and that each group leader counts their number of participants
Road injuriesApply highway code principles re pavements, crossing roads etc.
Terrain risksConsider risks from canals, zoos, railway lines etc. and warn / supervise accordingly
FiresInjuries from axes and sawsCheck equipment is sharp and safe to use
Train Scouts in use of axes and saws, do not allow Beavers and Cubs access to them
Injuries from firesTrain Scouts in the safe use of fires. Prohibit practices such as removing lighted sticks.
Limit access to fires by Beavers and Cubs to special activities where there is sufficient supervision
Prohibit games and running around fire areas
GamesInjuries arising from foul playEncourage fair play. Actively discourage foul play, by exclusion from the game if needed. In particular, tripping etc. should be prohibited
Collisions between playersEnsure that participants understand the rules of the games
In team games such as relays ensure there is sufficient room for each team. Apply approaches to reduce collisions such as all teams run in a clockwise direction
Injuries arising from HQ or equipmentEnsure games space is clear of obstacles and other impediments. Check equipment for obvious defects.
GeneralInjury from general mayhem and mischiefPlan programmes to eliminate opportunities for mayhem, e.g. by ensuring an adult is available to run a game at the start of the meeting or when an activity ends
Promote opportunities for good behaviour such as reward schemes, personal praise, competitions
Night TimeInjury to participantsEnsure reflective items / lights used when on roads
Warn of dangers from branches etc.
Water ActivitiesInjury to participantsUse approved instructors and equipment as per Scout POR
Injury to spectatorsSupervise spectators who should be made aware of the dangers of falling into the water
